Our Story

Luchos are named after Colombian road-racing pioneer Lucho Herrera. He exploded on the cycling scene when he won the Alpe d’Huez stage at the 1985 Tour de France, thus laying the foundation for subsequent Colombian greats, most recently rising star Nairo Quintana.

By chance our founder, avid cyclist & runner David Guthrie, came across an article about Colombian cycling that spoke of the energy bars that had powered Colombian cyclists for decades: ‘bocadillos’. These bars were made of the superfruit guava & sugar and came wrapped in a dried leaf. Lucho would stuff his pockets with them for every race. David was intrigued!

A chance encounter with a Colombian whose mother had sent him a package from home allowed him to try them for himself. “They were delicious, easy to eat and digest on the bike and gave me the energy boost I needed.” He was hooked, vowing to never return to energy gels again!

He travelled to Colombia to find the source of these amazing treats, and over the course of a lengthy trip was able to find a co-op of producers, working with fair trade farmers who would supply him with traditional high-quality bocadillos.

Thus began David’s quest to bring the wonders of guava and bocadillos to the world. All-natural energy bars for any athlete, chock-full of vitamins & nutrients, in an environmentally friendly natural wrapper.

  • Are they called Lucho Dillitos or Bocadillos

Lucho Dillitos is the brand name for our Colombian bocadillo. Bocadillo means sandwich in Spanish but in Colombian it refers to a tasty block of guava paste. These bocadillo have been a traditional 'energy bar' in the South American country for generations. Lucho Dillitos are manufactured in Colombia, with no additives, flavours or preservatives.
  • How long do they last?

Lucho Dillitos are essentially a preserve, like jam. They do not go off under normal storage conditions. We put a year from manufacture as the sell by date, the date is on the label on the box, but they are edible past this time. As they get older they will slowly get harder and start to dry out. To maximise freshness and keep your bocadillo as soft as possible we recommend storing them in an airtight container.
  • Will they melt in my pocket?

Our test market was Hong Kong, with temperatures over 30ºC and 90% humidity. Even if the leaf wrapper gets a bit wet the Bocadillo will remain intact.
  • I have a severe nut allergy, is it safe for me to eat?

Whilst our Bocadillo's don't contain nuts they are made in a facility that handles nuts and, whilst unlikely, we cannot guarantee no trace of nuts.
  • Is it suitable for vegetarians or vegans?

Yes they are. Our range of 3 flavours of bocadillo's only have 4 ingredients, guava and sugar are in all of them and the with raspberry also has raspberry and with coffee also has coffee.
  • Can I /do I eat the leaf?

I wouldn't, but it is unlikely to cause you any harm.
